It has generally been the fashion to smile whenever the, Chinese Navy is montioned, but Nationalist China is striving In earnest to build up a strong and efficient navy that will, in the words of Rear-Admiral Chen, Kao-Kwan of the Nationalist fleet, "put China in her proper place amongst the leading nations of the world."

Recently the entire second fleet Tonkin, 2nd Class Engineer; John "Thus far the educational cruise of the Nationalist Navy swung into William Jenkins, Master, B.; has been successful in every way. As most of these ships have been taking part in the civil wars dur- ing recent years,, no group inspec- tion or practice had been held for a long time, and Rear-Admiral Chen Kao-Kwan has now adopted a programme of keeping his men well trained in naval tactics and of making a thorough and regular inspection of all warcraft. Those that need overhauling or repairing will be sent to the naval dock at Shanghai.

The opening of the manoeuvres found all the officers gathered on the main deck of the flagship. The ship's band then played patriotic war made to a large framed picture of the late Dr. Sun Yat-sen, this being fallowed by Admiral Chen reading

It took only five minutes to cover the imaginary hole with a Heavy collision-mat, and then to rescue three men who had fallen overboard, the latter operation in- cluding lowering the lifeboats, effecting the rescue, and holsting the boats back to their original positions.

The most exciting moment came

when the fleet engaged in battle with an imaginary enemy fleet. The decks were cleared for action. and a mimic sea-fight followed, Anti-aircraft guns fired at invisi ble aeroplanes which were attempt ing to raid Nanking. Sailors rushed back and forward to put out fres that were supposed to have broken cut during the engage- ment. Admiral Chen, who was trained in the British Navy, issued orders from the bridge of his flagship.
