TEST CASE AT LIVERPOOL

INTERESTING ARGUMENTS

The hearing was resumed by the Liverpool Stipendiary Magis- trate (Mr. Stuart Deacon), of the claim by John Harper, a marine fireman, against his employers, a Liverpool shipping company. The claim made is for £1, the terms of the summons being that Harper having been lawfully engaged to serve as a seaman

on a vessel, claims the sum of £1, being the balance of wages due between June 20 and October 23, 1928, for a voyage on the ship.

The defending firm is support-

ed by the National Union of Sea- men, but it has been denied that Harper is backed by the Trans- port and General Workers' Union

SATURDAY, JANUARY 12, 1929.

The famous Liverpool sailing ship "Lalla Rookh" of 1876, which was a wonderful ship in her time, and even in the firewood trade has retained a lot of her old dignity and beauty, has been sold to Dutch scrappers after having been laid up at Mariehamn, in Fin land, for nearly two years. She was built in 1876 by R. and J. Evans, of Liverpool, for E. C. Friend, of the same port, and with her barque rig and tonnage of 841 was very similiar in all res- pects to her consort, the even better known "Shakespeare." She was intended specially for the Australian trade, and was one of the last ships to be built by Evaris. While on the regular Aus- tralian trade, taking general cargo outwards and bringing home wool, she made some re markably fast passages, although on one occasion she had a serious In 1896 her mutiny on board. original owners sold her to an other Liverpool firm, Messrs.
