REMOVING BARS

Aside from Calcutta, Berigal now has another major port. Chitta- gong, In Eastern Bengal, was grant- ed this status on April 1, 1928, which means that its statutory au- thority will be transferred from the local government to the Gov- ernor-General In Council, which will make possible various improve ments. The port is located on the right bank of the river Karnafuli at a distanco.of five miles from the open sea.

As an inland port,, Chittagong is protected from the sea and provid ed with jettles and anchorages to sult Inland as well as seagoing craft of all kinds. The port has. been handicapped somewhat be cause of the insufficiency of water!

in the river, preventing deep-draft

steamers from taking full cargoes; but provision is being made to over- come this diflculty. A powerful dredger, costing 1,600,000 rupees, has been recently delivered. This will remove sandy bars at the month of the Karnafull so as to ad- mit big abeamors from the Bay of Bengal within port limits.

The new Wolland Ship Canal, foining Lake Erie and Lake On. 'tario," which is now under con- struction, will be completed and ready for traffic in 1930. This new canal will bring to fruition an en- tarprise which was initiated more than a century ago. The object of
