CHERBOURG

ATLANTIC LINER FACILITIES AND EXTENSIONS

As was recently pointed out by M. C. Th. Quoniam, the president of the Cherbourg Chamber of Commerce, the time has come when it is no longer a question of making sug gestions OY evolving schemes

now

for the extension of the port, but of observing the pro- gress that has been made towards! Its development. Thanks to the efforts made by the Chamber of Commerce under the skilful and vigorous direction of M. Quoniam, facilities for the calls of the largest modern liners engaged in the Trans-Atlantic service are to be increased, and there is every reason to believe that the repută- tion of Cherbourg is to be not only maintained, but increased in the near future.

The success of Cherbourg as a port is due to the wonderful road- stead between Quequerville point and Pelce Island. It is jenclosed by three moles, the cen- tral mole being 3,750 metres long. The depth of water is 12 to 13' metres, so that there is safe an- chorage for the biggest liners, from which passengers and lug- by gage are conveyed to land means of tenders. Apart from that outer port, an inner port has been established since the con: struction of the Homet Jetty, 1,000 metres long, on the western Iside. The depth of water in this inner port is 6 to 11 metres. On the eastern side, the Flamands Jetty was recently constructed, so that the inner, port affords a complete security to vessels. On the southern side of the inner port, there is a landing-stage 225 metres long, for passengers.

While the trade of Cherbourg includes general cargo traffic, also important caul and oil trades, pas" senger traffic constitutes the most important part, as pointed", out above, and it is interesting to note in this respect that there are sometimes no fewer than 1,200 or 1,500 passengers landed from or embarked on the same liner, for which no fewer than 4 and sometimes 6 trains have to be provided in the same day.
