From the statistics issued by Lloyd's Register of Shipping re- garding vessels under construc- tion at the end of September, it will be seen that in Great Britain and Ireland there is a reduction of 112,850 tons in the work in hand hs compared with the figures for last June, and the present total- 1.089.768 tans-s also 446,656. Lon lower than the tonnage building at the end of September, 1927. As compared with that date, on the yde there is now a reduction of 27.7 per cent, while on the North East Coast the decrease represents no less than 47 per cent.
The diagram issued with these returns (which shows the tonnage building in Britain at the end of, each quarter since 1882) gives the average tonnage under construction during the last six years-Decem her. 1922, to September. 1928– which only amounts to about

Four countries abroad has more than £30,000 tons under construc- |tion, viz.-Germany, 423.375 tons; | Holland, 191,290 tons; France, 138,362 tons; and Italy, 132,730
tons.
The total tonnage under construc- tion in the world amounts to 2,521,342 tons, of which 43.2 per eent. Is building in Great Britain and Ireland, and 56.8 per cent. abroad; while the average percent- nges in the last 12 months before the war were 57.2 for Great Britain and Ireland, and 42.8 for abroad.
In Great Britain and Ireland

London-There is grave anxiety in the market on account of the tanker "David C. Reid," bound from Samarang for Philadephia, which passed Gibraltar on October 6, says the "Journal of Commerce" to hand. The steamer "Delilian". picked an S.O.S." giving the "David C. Reld's" signal lettera, but on proceeding to the spot indicated, found only an extensive patch of ofl, there being no sign of, boat or wreckage. On this news as much as 80 guineas per cent. hasd been paid, though the closing quotation is 75 guineaa per cent. The "David C. Reid" is a vessel of 5,647 tons gross, built in 1919, and is owned in America by the John Jay Shipping Corporation.
