AMBITIOUS YOUTH' AND GRIM

STARTING TIMES FOR TO-MORROW

2/11/2
Whatever the outcome of the four duys' tournament at the Crystal Palace, which is to be brought

close, a
it has proved beyond all question that the coun- try is teeming with youths with a passion for fighting. That many of those who took the ring at the big glass house at Sydenham will never win fame or fortune does not mat ter. The fact has been established that, the British boy is as much of a fighter at heart as ever he was.

All the competitors, with the pos Ksible exception of "Curlew," made errors of judgment, but possibly R. Young, D. J. Glimore. the greatest error was by the No. A. D. If such happens, as I feel will be the case, the very purpose of the 19.55 tournament at Sydenham will be; 11.00 destroyed. My advice, to even the most promising youngster, is to 11.05 gang warily. The day is far off when he may consider himself to be among the top-notchers. The best of those I saw have an immense amount to learn: They could not do better than make a note of the fact that the gymnasium of the National Sporting Club is about to be set up as a school of boxing Instruction, and that there they may acquire the knowledge which they must have 11.29 before doing any sort of good as whole-time professional fighters.

I have for
time been especially anxious to see the young Scot, and former Guardsman, Steve M'Call, and accordingly I was at the National Sporting Club to watch him in return

match with the Italian middle-weight, Leopardi. I would not judge M'Cali hastily, but I must confess to being somewhat disappointed with his performance. It is true that he won each of the fifteen rounds, save, perhaps, three, with any number of points to spare, but, to my thinking, he did not quite fill the bill.
