LIFE BELTS-
THE CHINA MAIL,
18 FORM SUBJECT OF POLICE PROCEEDINGS
"CUMSHAW"
When a Chinese was this morn. ing charged before Mr. R. E. Lind- sell, at the Central Magistracy, with the unlawful posession of 18 life- belts, he claimed that he had bought them from a man on the Bowrington Canal bridge for $1.50. This man had the appearance à being a go- down keaper, and he told him (ac- cused) that the belts had been "cum- shawed" to him by his master.
Asked what good the belts were to him, the accused said that he could make a little profit by re-sell- ing them to a marine hawker.
When his Worship remarked that the belts were curious articles to ateal, Inspector Macdonald said that they were old stuff and the police
had no idea where the accused could have got them from. The cork in- side the belt was quite good though. The Inspector added that when ar- rested the accused said that he was about to meet a man near the canal to buy the belts from him when a detective arrested him.
When The Police Arrived When this was put to the accused, the latter said that the interpreter had misunderstoood his statement. What he had said was that the man who offered to sell the belts to him asked for $1.50 per picul, and they were going to his (accused's) house to weigh the things when the detec- tive appeared.. The owner of the belts escaped and he (accused) was arrested.
The Chinese detective was ques. tioned and he said that at the time of his arrest, the accused was walk- ing with another man, and they were followed by a coolle carrying! the belts in two baskets. When the witness arrived, the accused's com- pattion ran away. This man, who was wearing a raincoat, had the ap-: pearance of a seafaring mon. This man removed the raincoat and dia- carded it as he ran, and witness picked it up.
The coolic, who was carrying the baskets containing the belts the ac eused admitted, had been engaged by him as a carrier, and therefore
