NORTH SEA ACTION
By Hector C. Bywater.]
On Sunday, August 11, 1918. there was fought in the North Sea a brisk little action which had far- reaching results on the subse quent course of the war. This en- gagement was noteworthy in it self, as being one of the rare occa alona on which a squadron of war- ships was pitted against a fleet of aircraft. It is also of historical Importance as having signalised the end for all practical purposes of the German Zeppelin campaign. In consequence of this affair all Zep- pelins were withdrawn from the North Sea zone and took no further part in the active conduct of the wor.
The action developed out of a British naval sweep along the West Frisian coast, where onemy light craft were reported to be cruising. Admiral Tyrwhitt, with his famous Harwich Force, had put to sea In the hope of cutting these ships" off. from their base and rounding them

The fight had been from a distance by a big Zeppelin, the L63, commanded by Captain Proiss, who ranked as one of the ablest of all German airship navi gators. This vessel remained hovering near the scene until she was sighted from the British squa dron. Preparations were at once made to attack her. Within a few minutes a Sopwith Camel aeroplane had been flown off a lighter towed at high speed by one of the de- stroyers, and was climbing stendily to get above its prey. The Zep pelin promptly made off to the east at full speed, but too late.”
