Start out by filling in the words of which you feel reasonably sure These will give you a clue to other words crossing them, and they in turn to still others. A letter belongs in each white space, words starting at the numbered squares and running elther horisontally or vertically or both.
(The solution of the above cross-word puzzle will appear in to-morrow's issue along with a new cross-word- puzzle.)

WIRELESS STORY
After the "fishy" atory, pride of place must be given to the more modern "wireless" story."
No doubt you have all heard of the man who "got" New York on a crystal set and then put on the loudspeaker because it was "roar ing" too loudly in the headphones, or perhaps of the enthusiast who was sure he heard signals from Mars asking him to go up and have a look around for himself, with the added incentive that he would see Venus too! ...:
SIR T. BEECHAM
CHANGE OF ATTITUDE AND THE B.B.C.
BUSINESS OVERTURES
The Wireless Correspondent of "The Daily Telegraph' writes:
While Sir Henry Wood, Sir Hamilton Harty, and Sir Landon Ronald have, for some time now, been on very friendly terms with the B.B.C., having realised how valuable is the aid offered by that organisation, their views have: not always been shared by Sir Thomas Beecham,

ROBERT DOLLAR CO.
ASKS MANILA FOR A RADIO, PERMIT
SENATE TO ACT
The-Robert Dollar Steamship Company through its Manila agent, filed with the Senate an application in the form of a bill for a 50-year franchise to install and operate a trans-Pacific radio station in the Philippines.
The application of the Robert Dollar Company is the second of its kind filed with the legislature Mackay Radio and Telegraph this year, the other being that of
Company of New York which also seeks a similar privilege. The latter firm, however, recently no- tifled its application so as to en- able it to enter in the local radio business by seeking the right to install radio stations between points in the Islands for the transmission and receiving of wireless messages.
Like the original application of the Mackay Radio Company, the Robert Dollar firmi seeks only the right to install a wireless long distance- station sufficiently well, and it seemed that Sir messages across the Pacific to the Up to a point negotiations.went powerful to receive and transmit Thomas's dream of permanent United States and neighbouring opera and a permanent first-class countries in the Far East such as symphony orchestra would be-Siam. "A five-valve Super-Hetero- dyne," he remarked as I awaited | the test, and continued to dust webs from the aerial, turn a lot of black knobs in the panel, and screw on the headphones.
He took a glance at the clock. Eleven o'clock. "Soon be coming through," he remarked, fixing the headphones on and turning the knobs round very slowly.
A few more screws tightened up and then the loudspeaker, be gan to say things, in Dutch., Holland! But I was disappointed. No, this was merely Java giving us a friendly call. Old friends of ours, these Java people; it seemed, but unfortunately we could not reply there were difficulties.
"Why don't you say good even ing to them, or something?" I asked. "I've forgotten all the Dutch I ever knew, do be a sport and reply," the wireless man re- plied, grinning.
Then I remembered he could not reply-a receiving aet would not let him.
More knob-turning and then a gentle little voice said "PCJJ Holland calling." Gradually it became clearer until we could make out quite distinctly what was said.
etc.
Not unnaturally, Sir Thomas will not tolerate dictation on tere concerning the artistic side mat of his work. In that respect he insists on unfettered liberty. The result is something like an im-
paese.

Committee Gets Bill
The bill was immediately refer red, to the committee on corpora tions and franchises of the Senate which is now considering the ap plication of the Mackay 'Radio Company. The latter firm's appli- cation has recently been favour ably endorsed to the Sonate by the public service commission. It is now in-the hands of the secre- tary of commerce and communi- cations for further study and com- ment.
