FRENCH ORDERS.
FOR BRITISH SHIP YARD,
PASSENGER STEAMERS.
P
THE CHINA MAIL,
Special interest altaches to the fact that within a few weeks two notable orders have been placed by French shipowners with the same British -yard-namely, Mesara, Swan, Hunter and Wigham Richardson, Ltd., who, needless to say, enjoy a high reputation among French shipowners.
First the Cle Generale Trans- atlantique baa contracted for the bullding of a medium-sized passen- ger steamer which is to be placed in service in Mediterranean waters, boing intended to be operated on the Marseilles-Oran route. This ship, which is to be named "President Dal Plaz," RB a tribute to the memory of the great Frenchman who died recently, is to be very like the "Lamoricière," a much etcamer which was delivered by Swan, Hunter to the C.G.T. about 1921, some years before the "Cuba," also built by the same Rritish yard for the same French company, and placed in service on the Central America ne; the successful per- formance on service of the "Lamori- cfère" and "Cuba" has no doubt accounted for the decision taken by the directors of the biggest French steamship company to renew busi- ness relationship with this British shipyard.

The analysis of the borrowings on a ship fortunate enough to carry a library reveals some curiosities. It is notable, for example, that the demand for high-brow fare is much more insistent and consistent in the fo'c'sle than on the quarter- deck. Here is a list of books read by an engine-room "wiper" Froude, "Life and Letters of Eras- mua," Kipling, "Captain Courage- ous," Russell, "Selected Essays" Hazlitt, "Table Talk," and the works of Shakespeare, Tennyson, and Coleridge.,
