RELAY STATIONS.
It seems likely that relay stations. will soon be catablished in the coun- try, and if a station is operated, say, at Newenstle, there will cer tainly be an increase in crystal sets in that district.
At one time it was estimated that in the metropolitan area probably 50 per cent. of the receivers were crystal acts. If that proportion is still maintained, a large number of those sets should be useful in New- castle, and consequently many people who are now not prepared to pay. the price of a valve receiver would become subscribers to the broad- casting services.
As already mentioned, the crystal set is used not only on secount of economy; many people prefer it on account of clarity of reception through a pair of headphones.

It
is certainly true that crystal re- caption generally is much clearer than the average valve and loud speaker reception. It also enables one to concentrate more on an item and exclude extraneous noises which sometimes mar the enjoyment of listening to a loud speaker.
It is a selfish method of listening, nevertheless.. Although some crystal sets are equipped with 2, 3, or 4. pairs of headphones, the general practice is to have one pair, and consequently only one person can listen-in at a time.
And with
some types of receivera which do not give a satisfactory volume, the selfishness of the reception is de monstrated very clearly when the Hatener objects even to the turning of a page of a newspaper by some other member of the family whe may be sitting nearby.

"A First Step."
This is only a first step, which each of the signatory States will have to work cut by national legislation, but the problem proved so difficult of solution that it was nearly shelved altogether, and it is under- stood that only the timely inter- vention of the British delegation secured the adoption of the new clause.
