Ellen Terry was

born in February, 1848, daughter of a family that had long been asso- ciated with the stage. She made her first public appearance when merely a child under. Charles Kean. She first appeared with Irving in "The Taming of the Shrew," and subsequently joined the Bancrofts. For some time she was with John Hare's Com- pany. Early in the 'seventies she had established her reputa- tion as England's most popular actress. In 1878 she joined Irving at the Lyceum and during the next twenty years the fame of Henry Irving and Ellen Terry was world-wide.
