At a conference of Swedish ship- owners held in Stockholm much at-j tention was aroused by a paper read by M. Emil Lofgren on the problem of ald and excessive ton- ninge. This problem of old ton- nage, M. Lofgren said, had its ori-1 gin in the unprecedentedly high demand for transport during the war years and the ruthless, dos- truction, causing more losses of} tonnage than were ever seen be- fore. The result of this was n forced activity in new construc- tion, while the. 'extraordinarily high freight rates also gave an in- centive to the building of new ves- sels.

The increase in trade between the Pacific Coast and the port of Dunkirk has resulted in the addi- tion of the latter port on the regular itinerary of the French Line.
