CHAMPIONSHIP RULES. The absorbing subject of our talk was, naturally, the attempt of the File (International Chess Federa- tion) to set up a Control Board of the world-championship. The main questions at issue are, whom shall the champion play? how often shall he play? how mány games shail he play? and for how much shall he play? The Pide suggestions. are, in effect: (1) The champion shall meet the winner of a tourney of the other great masters. (2) He shall defend his title periodically, say once in two years. (3) The num- ber of games shall be limited-this, in view of the inordinate length of the Alekhire-Capablanca match. (4) The stakes shall, be something like £500 in all.
Alekhine, his laurels fresh upon him, feels that the Fide has been a little premature. Former chess) champions have been despots, bene-'j volen or otherwise. The pieces of the Capablanca match are hardly back in the box when the new monarch is asked to submit to a complete change of the consitution i under which he won the throne. His views on the four points are:
(1) While he is ready to oppose any recognised master, the position is complicated by, the existence of two former champions, Linsker and Capablanca, whose record and pre- sent reputation should give them prior claims, promised the latter a return match,
