AVIATION'S NEED.
MUNICIPAL AIR STATIONS WANTED.
VIGOROUS 'CAMPAIGN.
[By Harry Harper.]
It has now been decided, after consultations between the bodies governing British aviation, to or- ganise without delag a vigorous. campaign 'to encourage town's and eities throughout the country to es- tablish municipal aerodromes and ulighting grounds. The need for such air-ports on a widespreati scale is vital at the present time. Unless landing and refuelling faci lities are to be found here, and everywhere, popular flying in this country cannot develop at the pace which is considered essentia).
The Afr Ministry, the Royal Aero Club, and the executions of provincial light aeroplane clubs are all working actively upon this na- tional airport scheme, and there have been private meetings Intely with a view to unifying effort in various directions. It is consider-

Many of the portents have come most favourable for a more general provision of aerodromes and landing-fields. The other day, while engaged upon some in- quiries in this direction, I was shown the plans of a palatial coun try club and Beld which are to be erected near a popular resort and one of the most interesting features of this scheme was a fine aero- plane alighting-ground; complete with.sheds, petrol pampa, and re- pair depot, and with an arrange- ment also for flood-lights, to facl- litate night flying. Also, another instance of this trend of develop- ment, there are now several golf clubs which are considering the allocation of a strip of land for the use of players who arrive in light: acroplanes, and that such a move is well justified may be gleaned from the fact that already, in the Royal Aero Club, a group of mem- bera have formed themselves into a little pioneer band of flying golf- ers, making it a rule to use aerial transport in fulfilling their engage- ments on the links rather than travel by road or rail,

Not only have we aerial traffic ns represented by privately owned 'planes to be catered for regular- ly now, but there is a growing ten- dency among the public to charter spaces, where dying taxi-men' can swift air-taxi types of craft. It is set down or pick up fares, and it is

But what I can say per- sonally, after discussions with many experts, is that neroplane club members and private air- craft owners are now eagerly on the lookout for places to fly to during their week-end trips, and that they would pay tribute to the enterprise, of any municipality which provided an air-port by mak- Ing frequent visits to that aero- drome, and by doing everything in their power to encourage a regular use of the facilities afforded, Nor is it, simply a question of catering for pleasure or touring traffic by nir. Far from it. It is now evl dent, having regard to the growth of aeroplane traffic between Eng land and the Continent, that there is urgent need for "feeder" afr Knez, operating between provincial centres and our new air-station at Croydon, and effecting regular con- nections with foreign departures., A network of such inter-connected inland air-lines has long been ad- vocated, and now the time has ar rived when, with the growth of private and air-taxi flying to aug- ment scheduled services, there is the strongest argument in favour of a chain of municipal air-sta- tions..
