The "Daily Dispatch" is what I might call a semi-national paper, inasmuch as its sale, extends over not only Manchester and Lanca- shire, but a very wide area outside. Indeed, this Is ob- vious from the figures I havé given you, figures which denote not only what is far and away the largest circulation of any provincial journal, but also ex- celling, in its area, that of any newspaper published in London.
Rediscovering Provinces,
I was very interested to read the other day that my friend Lord Rothermere had discovered the provinces of England. Following on this discovery, he has written one of those lorig and powerful articles, for the writing of which newspaper proprietors are be- coming famous.
In the article he
sets forth a few vital facts which had impressed him in the course of his investigations. For instance, he tells U8 that "It is in the provinces that the pre- ponderant part of the British nation lives," and, further, "that it is there where the great staple producing trades are carried on."
A good deal had been lately of the danger to the public of large groups of newspapers. He did not share those misgivings. Newspapers could only exist by the respect and
their interest of readers, and power misused led either to the decay of the news-i paper itself or the loss of its in- fluence on its readers and the decadence of the paper into a mere news-distributing machine. Moreover, as Mr. Philip Snowden surprising that it should be pos- pointed out recently, large groups sible to say this of a building meant better wages and better which is not situate in the capital

SUGGESTIONS FOR BOLVING CROSS-WORD PUZZLES Start out by filling in the words of which you feel reasonably sure. These will give you a clue to other words crossing them, and they in turn to, still others. A letter belongs in each white space, words starting at the numbered squares and running either horizontally or vertically or both.
(The solution of the above cross-word puzzle will appear in to-morrow's issue along with a new cross-word
puzzle.)
