BELFAST MARKET
REPORT.
The Belfast report of the Irish Linen Society for the fortnight ended March 7 states:-
Fax. Irish: Supplies have been small- er since last report, and if growers bring out their fax the markets will be practically finished at the ond of the present month. Demand has; not been so keen and prices for low- er and medium qualities slightly weaker, best quality unchanged in value.
Courtrai There is very little new to report. Supplies of lower and medium quality flaxes are fall- ing off, and, consequently, selection la more difficult. The demand for the poorer qualities was not so keen, and, consequently, the upward ten- dency of prices has stopped, but more interest has been shown in the better qualities by both home and Continental Spinners.
Latvian: No further sales' are reported. The Government is very firm on the basis of the last quot- ed prices, and is not inviting coun- ter-offers. Seeing that 70 per cent. of the crop has been sold and de- livered, the Flax. Department con- siders it is in a strong position, Enquiry from the different flax! consuming centres, however, is very.

HOME COTTON.
HUTTON'S MANCHESTER
REPORT.
CHINA BUYING.
According to Messrs. James F. Hutton's Manchester report dated March 14, cotton contin es firm and fluctuations during the past week, have been of the narrowest. Statis- tics published show very high can- sumption figures of American cotton for the first half of the season, and it is suggested that these figures are the cause of the steady market of the last week..
In Manchester the steadiness of the raw material has not had much influence on business in either cloth or yarn. The market has been on the dull, side and there has been very little doing.
The main terms are reported to The inward malls, do not give any be that the Feng-Hai Railway must encouragement to the bellef that return the rolling-stock to the Tao- there will be an increased amount nan Railway; the through traffic of buying in the near future, and contract between the South Man- reports received this week speak of churian Railway and the Fang-Hal the stock of staple cloths In Bom- Railway, which the Peking leaders bay as heavy, while Calcutta also cancelled, must be revived but the seems to have plenty of cloth in

MONDAY, APRIL 16, 1928.
India's total of cotton plece goods for last month was 132,808,700 aquare yards, as against 121,819,800 In 1927 and 144,214,800 in February 1926, and it la of interest to note that both Bombay and Calcutta re- ceived much more grey cloth than last year and a little more bleach ed cloth. -
China Buying,
again
China has been buying some fancies and 'some useful quan- titles of white shirtings are also reported as having been put down, which in view of the possibility of renewed, hostilities is rather sur- prizing.
Egypt has put forward a fair en- quiry principally for low quality shirtings and coloured goods, but prices are exceedingly difficult to arrange and offers are very bare in- deed.
Rather more enquiry la about from the Dutch East Indies, while the Home and Colonial trade sec- tions are certainly improving.
Production Costs.
HONG KONG TIDE.
The tide-table given below has been obtained by aid of the Tide-predicting Machine, which includes 40 components for the batter prediction of tides, from the result of the analysis of the tidal observations, taken at the Kaulung tidal observatory under the direction of Dr. Deberek during the years 1887, 1888 and 1889.
The times and heights are given for Kaulung; but they may be used for the Victoria Nava! Yard and Aber- deen, the differences being very small.
The times of high-and low-water must not be considered to coincide with the times of slack-water and change of current, the two phenomena being quito distinet.
