GASSED.
TRAGEDY ON A BRITISH TANKER.
UNABLE TO RAISE ALARM,
THE CHINA MAIL,
Further information has recent- ly reached the Imperial Merchant Service Guild regarding the tragic. circumstances in which their mem- ber, Mr. W. R. Jones, together with a seaman, lost their lives in the oil tanker "Daghestan" at Balik Papan.
This is an extract from the "Sin- gapore Free Preas" of January 18, which states that the tragedy oc- curred during the vessel's stay in port at Balik Papan on January 7, and how both men met their deaths is uncertain. A continuous witch la kept whilst the vessel is In port, and the second officer, Mr. W. R. Janes, was in charge of the watch from 12 midnight until 4 a.m. with n seaman, J. Thompson. Their duties consisted of inspecting the benzine tanks from time to time, and opening and closing the valves in the tanks. The seaman had to attend to this duty, and the mas- ter's standing orders were, that he must be accompanied during his inspection by the officer of the watch.
List to Starboard. What actually happened is not known, but at half-past three in the morning the shore loading! superintendent observed that the vessel had a list to starboard and informed the master, Captain W. Jackson, who called for the officer! of the watch, and stopped the fill-p ing of the starboard tank: As the officer could not be found any of the where, a thorough search vessel was made, and the two men were eventually discovered near one of the starboard benzine tanks, dead,
It is assumed that the seaman, in opening one of the valves of the tank near which the men were found, was severely gassed and fell down unconscious. On seeing this,
it is supposed, the second officer want to his assistance and was him- self gassed. The officers' living' quarters are near by, but other off- cors did not hear any noise to sug- geat that anything was amiss, whlist dockside workers alongside the ves-| ael were also unaware that any- thing of an untoward nature hadj happened.
