areas of South Wales.

Mr. Neville Chamberlain, Minis- ter of Health, replying, said he found in South Wales confidence both among the miners, mine own- ers and managers, that in time the situation would recover and the coal industry of South Wales would regain at any rate a large measure of its former prosperity, But while that might be true of the industry as a whole, in cer- tain particular districts there could be no such hope. Onë had to recognise that there might be a number of men estimated at some 200,000 who were unlikely to find permanent employment in the mining industry again.

That was the situation which

which might call for exceptional sent a letter to Sir A. Chamber. measures. The Government lain, Dr. Benes and

would not be deterred from tak-

ing such exceptional measures.

If there were large numbers of miners who could no longer find employment, obviously it would be a great mistake to take measures the effect of which would be still to tie them down to places where they could not earn their own livings.

The problem resolved itself into one of transference from, a place where there was no "work for them to places where there was work. One difficulty, about! the transference of these people was that they were miners. The Government were, however, tak-| ing steps to give them training in order to make it more easy for them to embark upon other means of support.-British Wire- leas Service.

it compulsory for all aeroplanes taking off from Great Britain with the object of flying any dis- tance exceeding 1,000 miles to be equipped with wireless and to carry satisfactory life-saving ap- paratus..

Sir Samuel Hoare replied that as at present advised he did not think it desirable to take powers to assume such far-reaching con- trol over private aircraft. Any auch regulations would be beset with peculiar difficulty and would be hardly likely to achieve their object. Neither Colonel Lind- bergh nor Hinkler carried wire- 'less and their flights would have been impracticable had, they been required to do so.-British Wire- less Service.

ON STUBBS-ROAD.

TRAFFIC CASE AFTER Å COLLISION.

ARGUMENT IN COURT.

Mr. Savadio was this morning summoned before Major: C. Will- son at the Central Magistracy for the dangerous driving of a Fiat motor car (No. 2118) in Stubbs- road at 6.45.p.m: on March 16,

He denied the offence and said that he was going up Stubbs- road behind a car which was be- [ing driven by a lady in an uncer- tain manner. After considering the matter with his engineer who was with him, he decided that it would be safer to pass the lead- ing car.

Mr. E. R. Dovey who was in the car in question (No. 1060) said that he was proceeding up Stubbs- road when rounding a bend he saw a car coming in the opposite direction. They both kept well to their own sides of the road,

Mr. Dovey said that had the Fiat passed his car a moment later there would have been a collision in which all three cara would have been mixed up. -

Mr. Savadio. asked to see the lady driver's licence, and a learn- er's licence was produced.

He inquired if learners were allowed. to drive anywhere or were con- fined to limited areas.
