Eving some startling results of his mission in a public lecture at the Collegio Romano, at which members of the Italian Geogra- phical Society.

the Minister of Instruction, Signor Fedele, Professors Paribeni, Antonelli, and Giglioli, and other scholars were present,

This mission caused a curious misapprehension last year when

Revised DATES of Extra Meetings a report in a Belgrade paper, afterwards repeated in other papers abroad, gave the alarm- ing news that a high officer of the Italian Supreme Command was superintending the digging of trenches and fortifying Pekinje, a little village on the site of the ruins of the ancient town of Phenikia. This story naturally created wonder and surprise at the Italian Foreign Office. But it eventually turned out that it was only Professor Ugolini, who was superintending archaeological ex- cavations, with some Albanian workmen..

HUNGRY RUSSIANS.

GET FREE MEAL AT TIENTSIN.

If Marshal Chang Tsung-chang demobilises without pay any more of his White Russian auxi- liaries, restaurant keepers in Tientsin look like pulling off a counter-revolution behind hia

lines.

In spite of reports that Marshal Chang is retaining his White Russians, and that they are so well paid they use dollar bills to light their cigars, Tientsin re- staurant keepers know otherwise. They base their belief on this incident;

Last Sunday night three Rus- sians, formerly in Chang's, army, entered the Miniature Restaurant on Council Road and ordered a square meal — square, of course, meaning abundant and staggering supplies of food, with plenty of liquor to wash it down..

With an appetite sharpened by months of hardy campaigning the three men stowed away the following:

Nine large Hamburger steaks. One dozen nicely cooked eggs. Large quantities of bread and

butter.

One bottle of Gordon's gin. Seven bottles of beer. Umpteen whisky aodas.

Prices in Tientsin being 'ob- viously much lower than in Shanghai, a bill for $15 was pre- sented to them,

That is where the rub came in. Having stretched themselves, rubbed their waistcoats, smacked their appetities, they cheerfully announced inasmuch as Marshal Chang Tsung-chang had omitted to pay them they could not pay the bill. They made the happy suggestion that the restaurant keeper might collect the money. from the Marshal himself.

The three were taken to the British police station, but the police authorities were in a quan- dary regarding what should be done with them. The only legal means to recover 'would be the Institution of a "civil action against the thred Russians, who again cheerfully announced "Try and get it..

Mr. L. Warren, of Messrs. Lover Bros., Shanghai, who was married recently in Hong Kong, has left with his bride to return to Shang- hai. They called yesterday on the "President McKinley.",
