TO-DAY AT THE RACES.

THE ANNUAL MEETING.

Big Crowds And Ideal Conditions.

·HEIR APPARENT DEFEATED.

BENGAL ALSO FAILS TO WIN.

Perhaps the biggest attendance during the last few years- when the first race was started at noon-was present when the Hong Kong Jockey Club's annual race meeting began to-day at Happy Valley in ideal weather.

All that could be desired war in evidence-plenty of money about, punters cheerful, owners and jockeys confident, arrangements brought further up-to-date, the course in a firm but not too hard condition-and the opening race had all the essentials of a successful beginning.

Of new features at the meeting there were noticed the "red- light" over the runners' board to signal the closure of the pari- mutuel; the taking up of more room for betting in the members' enclosure; little or no improvement at the cash sweep counter; and the starting of the, six and five furlong races from within the en- closure, instead of taking advantage of the long straight run from Craigengower past the Football Club's house as in former years.

Heir Apparent, the Derby favourite, was unplaced in the Trial Plate. Peck, second favourite for the Blue Riband, won by a head

from Coos Bay.

Little Sit Tang paid $569,40 for its win in the Chater Cup.

DIVIDEND OF $569.

This year fewer Shanghal jockeys have come down for the meeting.

Ladies were abroad very early, lending a nice touch of colour to a drab background which had been cunningly camouflaged with bunt- Ing. Parasols were needed more than mackintoshes, in spite of the rain, during the week-end and the "progress" shown each year, in the ability of the fair sex to detect from instead of following a name or a number-was fully in evi- dence.

Traffic on the approaches to the course and enclosures was smartly handled by the Folice. Inside the enclosures the Jockey Club officials managed affairs with precision; and the thousands in the Valley or In the small booths helped to make the week's carnival of racing the success it is.

To-day's Lessons, Two major problema for the rast of the week were solved to-day, that is, if the form shown will prove a reliable guide. Heir Apparent, which had been hot favourite for

was won in fine style by Mr. Dun bar'a Chesapeake Bay, Mr. Mait- land up. Bengal was second, three lengths belifnd, and San Francisco third.

Eight also turned out for the Valley Stakes, which were 'won by O-Moon by five lengths from Erst- while, paying the tidy dividend of $12.10-

of the most urgent problems in Kwangtang province are to receive the immediate attention of the present Canton Govern- ment. One le the re-starting of the campaign against bandits and outlaws who, in some parts of the province, have over-run large areas; and the other the transfer of activities against labour unlons to the farmers' union. Meanwhile, there are indications that an offensive against the Swabue Soviet will be launched at the same time and made a part of the general plans.
