THE CHINA MAIL,

FAMOUS SHIPBUILDING YARDS

IN BALTIC.,

On October 4 the Schichau works, the famous shipbuilding yards, en- gineering workshops and foundries of the Baltic, celebrated their 90th anniversary. The beginnings of this great industry were modest. Its nucleus, a small workshop, em- ploying eight work-people, was founded in 1887 by Ferdinand Schichau, the Bd-year-old son of an Schichau Elbing brass-founder.

was himself to direct the affairs of the undertaking for nearly 60 years. The firm has to its credit In many notable achievements. 1841 It built the first steam dredger in Germany. In the middle of the 19th century, on the transition from wood to steel ship construction, Schichau, who had hitherto occu- pled himself, so far as marine con- struction was concerned, solely with the manufacture of engines, found- ed the shipbuilding yard at Elbing. Hore was launched in 1864 the first propeller-driven steamship which was built in Prussia, and which, ap- positely enough, bore the name of "Borussia," the first recorded ver- slon of "Prussia" (Bo-Russia- Near Russia). In 1890 Inadequate water facilities at Elbing led to the laying-down of the yards at Danzig, Later on a considerable share of the activities of the yards was de- voted to naval construction, ea- Since pecially of torpedo-boats. their first founding they have launched 1,200 vessels, including the "Columbus," at present the larg est German passenger and freight steamer, which was built for the ac- count of the North German Lloyd In 1928. The yards now comprise stocks for 22 vessels. The locomo- tive workshops were opened in 1860, In 1881 the firm produced the first triple-expansion steam engine, on the Continent. Later the manufac- ture of turbines, Diesel motors, boilers, and cranes was undertaken; In 1897 the Schichan steel foundry, now the largest of its kind in North Germany, turning out castings up: to 80 tons, was established. The present total area of the company's ¦ works and yards is 1 million square metres.
