U. S. SHIPPING.
PRESIDENT AND SALE OF STEAMERS.
Washington, Yesterday. Talking to Press men, President Coolidge referred to the Jones Bil. and expressed the opinion that the United States Government should not build any more merchantmen, as the Government had more Ves sels than they can use.
Any Government body, such as Plnom parog Buddys judaad ey always encounter a great difficulty and heavy financial los in an at- tempt to operate shipping. :
bs
Therefore, the sale. of Govern-| ment-owned ships should not held up or restricted as in the pro- posed Bill. President Coolidge was of opinion that private ownership with merchantmen under the American flag was only obtainable with Government assistance in the shape of mail contracts and possibly some provision for the crews.-Reu- SUBMARINE VICTIMS. ter's American Service.
DEATHS ABSOLUTELY PAINLESS.
Province Town (Massachusetts),
Yesterday.
Six more bodies have been re- | covered from submarine S4, mak-
ing a total of 23.
At the Naval Court of Inquiry;
in Boston doctors gave evidence that the deaths of the crew were due to carbon monoxide poisoning
A special corpa of dock labour- era went on the ship to remove cases of cargo from the forward) holds with a view of lightening that portion of the ship that had passed over the wall. Hopes were entertained that it would be pea- sible to refloat her on the after- noon tide. She had run on to the
wall stem first, and the forepart appeared to be above the wall it- self. When the tide was at its full height and the fog had lifted, six tugs were stationed at her stern, all with powerful hawsers. They hung on waiting for the signal to pull, but when the signal was given there was no res ponse, the ship remaining hard and fast.
The evening tide will be lower, but there is little hope of moving her, and it is probable she will now break her back and become a total wreck, the fate of several other vessels in this very spot.
