LACK OF AIR.
CAUSE OF BLOW-OUTS IN TYRES.
you wanted to break a wiro and had no tool with which to do it, how would you proceed? You would bond the wire and straighten it but again, and continue until at last it snapped: At each succes- sive bend, you would really tear apart, a few of the wire fibres until they parted completely.
That is what happens with tyre fabric when tyres are under-inflat- led. But because the fabric is tougher than wire, it takes longer to break.
Care of tyres is simple, and means care of the money in your pocket. The careless habit of driv- Ing a car with under-tnflated tyres is expensive...
As with breaking a strand of
wire, the continuous bending, of the walls of a tyre weakens the fibres. Have you ever noticed the flat or belly of an under-inflated tyres just below the hub?, Every time the wheel revolves once, every inch of the tyre will have been flattened out or bont, and then straightened again.
¿
It can be figured that when a 82-inch tyre is driven 100 miles under-inflated, the fabric has been bont 63,000 times.
Is it any wonder that a tyre so used will eventually not be able to hold the air which has been pump. ed Into it to a pressure of 30 lbs. per aquare inch? Probably a tyre which has been so misused for a

There is a similar happening when a car is backed against a korb badly. When tyres hit the square corner of the kerb, they dent almost to the rim, and their elasticity pushes the car, forward again.
Improper adjustment of the brakes is the cause of much tyre trouble and of dangerous skidding. When brakes are adjusted, both rear wheels should be lacked up, and the holding power teated by hand, The adjustment should be such that each wheel will give an equal résistance.
If this is not done when the brakes are applied, only one wheel will lock, but, not having enough grip on the ground to stop the car, it will slide along, and in doing so, leave some of its rubber behind." And the car will skid even on a dry road. On a wet road the skid will be dangeroua,,
