TRAINING BOYS

WORK OF THE GRAVESEND

SEA SCHOOL..

THE CHINA MATE

The ninth annual report of the Management Committee of the Gravesend Sea School states:-We are again glad to be able to say that the output of the school has been well maintained during the past year: Although there has been a reduction of, 146, in the total num- ber of boys, Bent to sea; only 51 of this number were "first shipments," the total number of both first and second shipments being still in ex- cess of the average since the com mencement of the school. Thi we venture to think-is a tribute to the high standard of character and physique which is necessary in order to obtain admission to the school and the suitability of the training given. During the past year it has become increasingly difault to Becure sufficient lads with the proper qualifications to keep the school up to its normal capacity. Greater publicity has therefore been given to the school throughout the provinces, which has enabled the inflow of new mate- rial of the right quality to balance the demands made upon the school for trained youths for service in the British Mercantile Marine.

It is gratifying to state that the reports which are regularly receiv ed concerning Gravesend boys at sea are almost uniformly satis- factory, and the act-that mastera who have once carried Gravesend boys regularly apply to the school to fill any vacancies, may also be. regarded as practical testimony to the satifactory manner in which the youths perform their duties. A perusal of the reports received throughout the year shows that numerous lads have, by continuous service in the same ship, earned arseilles & & London Marsefiles,

promotion to higher ratings, and in Marseilles,
