The issue of Lloyd's Calendar for 1928 serves as a reminder that this is a work of reference which, it is to be feared, is sorely neglected by underwriters, even those who are members of the great corporation which publishes the work. It may be said that Lloyd's Calendar con- tains so much information which is useful, and in some cases essential to underwriters, that it is astonish- ing to find it absent from practical- ly every underwriter's desk, at least 80 far as the London Marine In surance Market is concerned. One excellent feature of this year's issue is the segregation of legal matters into a new section of the book, ship. wherein will be found some inter- esting Inw casca decided during the legal year ending with the Trinity term of 1927.

It is to be noticed that these cases deal more with shipping than with insurance matters, although the case of the Merchants Marine v. North of England Association, dealing with the question of whe ther a floating crane is a ship or vessel, is included. What is real ly useful about the legal section from the underwriters' point of view is that in it are gathered the various Carriage of Goods by Sea Acts and other shipping Acts, con- cerning which underwriters those days often require quickly

availble information. Indeed, from the underwritera", point of view, it is perhaps a pity that the York Antwerp Rules remain in Section 2, instead of being included with the other codes in the legal see tion, although it must not be for gotten that the York-Antwerp Rules are a purely voluntary code and have no legal effect, save that which is gained by the provision for their use made in contracts of affreightment. For the rest, it may be said that Lloyd's Calendar is now a text book in itself, and if it is not included in the list of books recommended. for study by students of marine insurance under the Chartered Insurance Institute's educational schemes, it should quickly find a place in that list.
