KOWLOON BORDER.

COMMUNIST NEAR BRITISH FRONTIER.

"RED" PLOT FAILS.

Samchun, the border town just outside of the British frontier of the New Territories, narrowly escaped fate familiar to that which

Canton suffered at the hands of the Communists last week.

Only a mile or so beyond the border, this thriving market town has been denuded of troops ever since the Ironsides launched their coup last month to overthrow the Kwangsi military faction, and establish themselves as the ruling power of Canton.

To guard their home fires, the Ironsides had withdrawn the frontier garrison. A handful of railway guards are at Samchun- it being the terminus of the Chinese section of the Canton- Kowloon Railway- but the duty of preserving order had devolved on the Merchant Militia (or (volunteers), a semi-official body of guards popularly known as the "Man Tuen.

Not a Shot Fired.

The "Man Tuen" had received intelligence that a body of Reds, inspired by the extremist Peasant Corps, were plotting. The final word was that the plot would be set in movement on Saturday when Samchun was to be raided on lines, similar to those adopted at Canton.

Fortunately, the "Man Tuen" were on the qui vive. Before they got to within a few hundred yards of Samchun, the Red in- vaders saw the place closely guarded and immediately stole off without even making a bid.

Not a shot had to be fired. Re- fusing to be drawn away, the volunteers stuck to their ground.

Residents had to seek shelter. at night but the timely arrival of a brigade of the 2nd division under Lt-General Hsieh Yo re- stored peace of mind, Two com- panies came to Pakkai, the port of Kongmoon... Strategic points are guarded day and night.

Subsequently, more troops of the 2nd division arrived but they are moving on elsewhere as a gunboat stood by, waiting for their departure on a fleet of com- mandeered junks.

Thirty. Communists Shot. News was received that there has been a conflict between the pro-Communist Peasant Corps, and the pro-Moderate Merchant Militia at several places up-country.

The Reds tore .p a part of the Sunning Railway but the damage was immediately re- paired.

About thirty men suspected of being in intrigue with the Communists are believed to have been shot at Kongmoon.

Seamen's Posters. More troops arrived from up- country on Saturday, these units marching in response to Canton's frantic summonses for reinforce- ments. They left immediately for Canton.

Posters have appeared on the walls of the Customs compound, asking the Police and the military to support the seamen in their strike--in obedience to ordera from. Canton agitators—against the owners in Hong Kong.

BUILDING FUND SALE.

SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION,

The

Diocesan Girls' School, Jordan Road, Kowloon, was en fote on Saturday afternoon when past and present students of the school held a sale in aid of the School Building Fund.

There was a good attendance at the fair, mostly children and young folks, and as there were attractions for all, every one had a very enjoy. able time.

There was a tea dance during the afternoon to music supplied by the now popular "Antidotes," who are always willing to render assistance at affairs of this kind, and many couples enjoyed a "whirl" around to

appy jazz tunes played, in "Antidotes"" appealing way.

the

Stalls there were many, all faden with fine goods well worth the money one spent at the fair.

There was one stall called the "school work stall" in which were offered for sale the handiwork of the students from Class 1 to Class VI. In addition, each class ran a stall of its own as follows:

Class I-The Christmas Tree laden with all the pretty things so dear to the young one's hearts.

Clasa II-The competitions and raffles which included some very desirable prizes,

Class III The fruit stall, with

all the tempting fruita in season.

Class IV The miscellaneous stail. Class V-The Chinese stall. Cinsa VI-The sweet stall, The Diocesan Old Girls' Associa tion ran a fancy stall of its own and In addition handled some of the competitions, which included shying rubber balls for toys, candies, etc.

During the afternoon there was

cent. is levied on rent, the land- acting as officers, and two pro-lord and the tenant each paying fessional agitators from Canton in command.

Confidence is felt that the militia will be able to keep the Reds out. Trains are running

without hindrance.

On inquiry from Police circles, the "China Mail" gathered that no reinforcements had been sent to the border station of Lok-ma- chau and it is accordingly presum- ed that the Communist plot is not of much significance.

Mrs. Luard. The sale was opened by Mrs. C. C. Luard, wife of H.E. the General Officer Commanding the Forces, who In a happy little speech thanked the school for asking her to open the sale. She said that it afforded her great pleasure to perform the cere- mony, the first of its nature that she had done here. She went on Girls' School, and said that during to refer to the work of the Diocesan

a former visit to the school she was struck with the system of manage- ment of the school which made it possible for the students to appear happy in spite of the fact that the examination was near, as then was the case. Mrs. Luard concluded by wishing every success to the sale, and was then conducted by Mias Sawyer, Head Mistress of the School, on a round of inspection of the stalls and other attractions.
