THE DYNAMOTOR.

AN ELEMENTARY ARTICLE FOR THE BEGINNER

The term "dynamotor" to the entirely uninitiated may, possibly suggest a new discovery in medical science such as an obscure nervous complaint, but actually it is a very convenient and expressive term, meaning a type of machine capable of operating either as a dynamo or a motor-the latter, of course, be- ing the electric variety, Inciden- tally, the term must not be con- fused with "dynamometer," which is an entirely different machine, used for measuring the horse- power of engines. It is difficult to say, that the dynamotor is anyone's invention, but to-day It is a very valuable machine from a motorist's point of view, as it enables the lighting and starting to be provid- ed by one machine instead of by two separate ones. The last mentioned arrangement is still the most generally adopted, but the dynamotor is coming rapidly into favour, particularly for quantity production and moderately priced

cars,

The principle of a dynamotor is an easy one to understand, particu- larly if the simple theory of a dynamo be previously understood. A dynamo produces electrical energy by the rotation of a certain arrange- ment of loops of wire in a magnetic field of force, but if, instead of rotating this wire-loop arrange ment electrical energy be sent into it, rotation will be produced.

The sale of British machines, to Germany has been unprecedented, and most of the big firms have shared in the German business. This export trade is remarkable, sceing that rates of exchange and tariffs make the British machine costly in practically all European countries.

A Chance Discovery. To electrical engineers a dynamo is known as a perfectly convertible machine; it can either generate electrical energy from mechanical power or produce mechanical power from electrical energy. In this connection there is an interesting historical fact, namely, that the convertibility of a-dynamo to a motor was a mere chance discovery. It was at the Paris Electrical Ex- hibition of 1878 that one day a

to this dynamo, and he proceeded to, connect them up. To his great surprise, the dynamo started to run un its own and actually drove the steam engine with the steam shut off! Investigation proved that the loose cables were conveying cur- rent from another dynamo in motion and this had converted the stationary dynamo into a motor. From that day forward the use of the electric motor advanced rapidly. It should be made clear, however, that electric motors of an inefficient type were known many years before this chance discovery, but these machines were not made on dynamo principles and could not possibly have led up to the vast present-day applications of elec- trical power.

Start out by filling in the words of which you feel reasonably sure These will give you a clue to other words crossing them, and they in turn to still others. A letter belongs in each white space, words starting at the numbered squares and running either horizontally or vertically or both.
