Mr. C. J. Cooke's effort calls for great praise. No one doubted that he would win yesterday, and so lift the "McKinonon" cup, but nobody expected that the veteran swimmer, who, we understand, is 52 this year, would set up such a fine pace and nearly beat the record of 22 mins. 26 secs. set up by J. C. Finch in 1913, Cooke's time of 23 mins. 17 and 3/5 seca. being only 51 and 8/5 secs. more. He certainly had bad luck in not beating the record, as at the last buoy he had only taken 16 mins. and it was felt that be could cover the remaining distance in the six minutes.
