U.S. SHIPS BOARD.

DECIDES TO END PIONEER LINE.

That the U.S. Shipping Board has definitely decided to discontinue operation of the American Pioneer Line, a direct cargo service between New York and ports of the Gulf and the Orient, was confirmed by the board. This line is operated for the Board's Merchant Fleet Corporation by the Atlantic. Gulf and Oriental Steamship Co., Inc. of New York City.

This action is the result of the board's desire to bring about better conditions In the service, according to Commissioner Philip S. Teller, who indicated the line constantly has been a source of worriment to

the board.

The Board has ordered the Mer- chant Fleet Corporation to make a survey of the line's ships with a view to taking све of its commitments by chang- ing allocations to other lines of the board operated in the Gulf service.

No announcement of the realloca† tions is expected to be made, how- ever, before the return from Europe of General A. Dalton, president of the Fleet Corporation. No aug. gestions were, offered concerning what operators may take over, the commitments of the American Pioneer Line,

SHIPS ATTACKED.

RIVER BANDITS TAKE TOLL AT ICHANG.

Hankow, Sept. 30. The bandits, who had been inter- foring with the shipping navigating in the neighbourhood of Patung, were driven off by General Yang Sen's troops, but the majority have again appeared at a point 3 or 4 miles above Ichang. These bandits fire at vessels navigating in the vicinity and force them to halt. They demand $600 from a Isrge-sized vessel and $400 from a small-sized one. It appears that almost all vessels comply with their demand.

As the place where the bandits are stationed is a buffer zone between General Yang Sen's Army and that of General Liu Hsiao-ping, the ban- dits are free from an attack, and steamers sailing in that vicinity are menaced.-Toho.

According to him, special certi- ficates are issued only during sum- mer vacation so provincial students in Manila could go to their home- towns without much delay.

The line representa a consolida tion of two former separate ser vices, one operating from the Gulf to the Orient by the Tampa Inter- Ocean S. S. Sixteen steel cargo steamers and one motor ship are employed in this service, aggregating approximately 200,000 tons.

A possible violation of Navy re- gulations is seen in the fact that Admiral Magruder failed to submit manuscript copy of the article to Curtis D. Wilbur, Secretary of the Navy, before publication.
