JAPANESE THRONE.
CELEBRATING BIRTH OF
PRINCESS.
Tokyo, Japan, Sept. 9. Booming signal guns in the walled and moated Imperial Palace grounds here to-day conveyed [news of the birth of a second child to the youthful Empress of Japan.
Upon the signal, which was car=Į rled throughout the Empire on' the instant by radio and other means, celebrations started in every city and hamlet.
But the celebrations were not ns heartfelt as, they might have been had the word not gone out that for the second time the long- awaited Imperial infant had prov- ed to be a girl. ·
For weeks the nation has offer- ed up its prayers that the popular roung Emperor, until recently the Prince Regent, might become the father of a son and heir. The first daughter was received with La certain equinimity, but this time the nation is deeply dis- appointed.
Elaborate celebration could not take place in any event, for. in special request has been made by the Imperial Household Office, that the Home Office see no spec- tacular demonstrations are con- ducted in view of the mourning of the nation over the death of the late Emperor Taisho, father of the present Emperor. Governors of the various prefectures have received circular notification.
Lantern processions and other time-honoured festivities of re- latively minor nature are being planned, howeyer.
