HUGE SUMS TRANSFERRED TO

CANTON.

Nationalist Arrivals,

Over $100,000 in money passed through Hong Kong yesterday as a result of the political disturb antes in Swatow, the Treaty port in Kwangtung which is less than 200 mlies from this Colony.

The money is believed to have been from the branch of the Cen- tral Bank in Swatow, comprising $200,000 in Nationalist bank- notes and $216,000 in silver coins, the whole being packed in 110 boxes.

Whereas the crisis at the Cen- tral Bank in Canton was due to lack of confidence in the note iasue, the trouble at Swatow has been brought about by fear of invasion. The brother of the Bank's manager at Swatow is stated to have accompanied the arrival at treasure and, on Hong Kong, immediately to have transhipped the full amount to a steamboat bound for Canton.

Martial Law la Force.

On the arrival at Swatow of the retiring Nationalist troops, a general exodis began, including some of the military who took the first available boat for Shanghai and Ningpo.

By Tuesday morning, most of the shops had closed their doors. The Central Bank (run by, the Canton Government) also an- nounced that business would be suspended for five days. Martial law was declared, forbidding people to go about between the hours of 10 p.m. and 6.a.m. Rumours were current that, the force advancing against Swatow and neighbouring towns number ed at least 4,000 strong-big enough to sweep away any op position the authorities may put up.

Highly Desired Prize. There was anxiety about several hundreds of cases of rife ammunition at Chao-chao, the capital of the prefecture. It ultimately transpired that this highly desiréd prize had been moved into Swatow and placed on board a steamer for safety.
