FASHIONS AND FANCIES

There has been a distinct de parture both in line, material and colouring in the lingerie that is being displayed for the summer wardrobe. New ideas prevail, and they are ideas that are apt to be fol- lowed with much enthusiasm. They present undergarments in exceed- ingly lovely lines and in enticing tones.

Lingerie is important for reasons other than its beauty. A gown's cut is governed by what is worn be neath. Consequently the lines of amart lingerie have changed along with the mode that it follows. The. former limitations of lovely under- garments have been overcome and the new lingerie la designed along widely different lines. Its chief function, of course, is to make the figure slender and enhance the na- tural beauty or attempt to hide de- fects.

chids, rose, white, beige, black and flowered patterns there is every faste to satisfy. Appliques and in- crustations are some of the hap. piest means of lending variety and beauty to the garments. Ribbons also are chosen to make effective shoulder straps-when there any.

SUGGESTIONS FOR SOLVING CROSS-WORD PUZZLES

Start out by filling in the words of which you feel reasonably sure. There will give you a chae to other words crossing them, and they in turn to still others. A letter belongs in each white space, words starting at the numbered squares and running either horizontally or vertically or both.

(The solution of the above cross-word puzzle will appear in to-morrow's issue along with a new cross-word puzzle.)

WOMEN IN COMMERCE.

Are women driving men out of commerce, or are they failing to maintain the positions that they won in the war?

A Ministry of Labour official, ask- ed to answer these questions, told reporter that women are just hold- ing their own in commerce. He said:-

Just after the war there was'a sharp drop in the number of 'wo- men employed in commerce, insur- ance, and so forth, due to the fact that men were returning for their jobs. This sharp decline soon ended, and by 1921 things were somewhat stable.

From 1921 until 1923 there was a slight decline in the number of women employed in these · call- inga, but since then that small falling-off has been made good and women are just about holding their own in the commercial field. In the stable years that have fal- lowed the war-after the last man had returned from the Forces for his job there has been a decrease of 100,000 insured women workers in all trades, not including agricul- ture, domestic service, and outwork, and an increase of 300,000 men.
