ACCUMULATION OF STOCKS.
Abnormal Conditions In Interior.
Shanghai, July 29. As a result of the abnormal con-' ditions in Shanghaj's hinterland the British-American Tobacco Co., Ltd. have been forced to close their Shanghai factories, thereby throw- ing out of work some 8,000 labour-1 er, more than 50 per cent. of whom are women. The lockout will last indefinitely, according to officials! of the company-until orders are received that the stocks have been! depleted enough to warrant a re-i opening on a smaller acale.
Orders to the effect that such action was advisable were received! more than a week ago from the head office and within the pasti four or five days department after department have been cutting down their stoffa.
Even before the final orders werel received the smaller factory in Yangtszepoo was closed-some two weeks ago affecting 800 or 500 persons. Then came the instruc-| tions that all manufacturing opera-| tions should be curtailed and thei staff of more than 7,003 in Poo- tung was gradually turned off.
Over-Stocked.
The departments of the company in Pooting include two factòries in which are manufactured the cigar- ettes for native consumption, two printing departments, where the advertising posters are made and an engineering departnient.
The last of the workers left the factory Jast evening, the total num- ber having been cut down to 3,500. Most of these, it is said, live in the districts near by and can back to work on short notice.

According to the officials the closing of the factories is not ocn- neeted by any way, at present, with the increase in tuxes levied by the Nationalist. Government in Nar- king. It is simply a case of having on hand more stocks than can disposed. In normal times, with| the factories running at the rate they have been lately, the stocks. would be under supplied, but the, company within the past few months--as is the case of practical- all such concerns-have been forced to withdraw their represes- tatives..
