WINDFALL FOR CROWN.

VALUABLE CITY PROPERTY OWNERLESS.

An ancient court, the sittings of which are extremely rare, was held at the Guildhall, London, when à Special Commission of Eschént, set up by the Crown, under the author- ity of the Wafer Great Seal, sat with a jury of 12 men to decide the- ownership of a City property.

it

The property in question is quarter of an acre of land on which part of the famous Barbicon Re- pository stands. The last owner Was a Brighton woman, Mrs. Cecelia Lucy Stollery, who was claimed to have died intestate.

Mr. H. J. Howland, of the Trea- sury Solicitor's Department, ap peared for the Crown, and inform- ed the court that no known rela- tives could be found as legal claim-| ants to the property, the present value of which was about £700, a

year.

The property originally belonged to Mr. Richard Stollery, for some time a member of the Court of Com- mon Council. lie gave it to his wife by deed and she made a will In his favour. Mr. Stollery pre- deceased his wife, who was child- less, and she had made no further will. Under these circumstances he asked that the property shouldi become eschent to the Crown, the Treasury having collected the rent since her death, In December 1921.

The jury found for the Crown. A similar court has not been held in London for mors than 30 years,
