AT "MACAO.

TRIP TO THE NEW RACE COURSE.

SPLENDID DAY'S OUTING.

(By Stalwart.") Yesterday I went to Macao and for the first time visited the race course away outside the town on the seafront reclamation. I think I am going to like this Macno Course. It is comfortably arrang ed, is compact, and one feels quite at home "there. Or, at least, I did. Of course, if racing, was to become tremendously popular in the Portuguese colony, and if the influx of visitors was, say, to treble itself, the course would not be so comfortable. It would be too small. But that eventually is an unlikely one. The Chinese of Macan will never take to pony racing as they do in other places, simply because they have their Tan-tan

gambling and other games. At the best, the Chinese only attend, races to gamble. They have no other interest in the relative running or value of pony flesh, and why, therefore, should they speculate $5 on a pony and, if it wins, get, say, $5.90 back, when if their $5 wins at fan-tan they will receive three times as much, less the "house's" commis- sion?

Still, for the European com- munities, both at Macao and long Kong, the new course has its de- finite value, and there should always be enough support forth- coming from these quarters to guarantee the continuance of the venture. The existence of the i Macao course helps to promote the sport of racing, and has cer- tainly added to its interest both here and in Macao; has brought fresh ponies to the fore, new riders, and most important, new owners.
