WHEN GREENOCK PLAYED SECOND FIDDLE.
In view of Greenock'a fight for the annexation of Port-Glasgow and. Gourock, it is interesting to note (writea "J. D." in the "Glas- gow Evening Newa"), from Chamberlayne's Magane Britanniae Notitia" (1720), the relative im- portance of these places 200 years ago.
Under the heading "Shire of Ren- frew" it is stated: "The con-
veniency of the Firth of Clyde, the const whereof is all very safe for ahipa to ride in, has caused great Improvements in these parts. At the West-End of a fair bay stands, Gowrook (Gourock) town and castle belonging to Sir John Shaw, Bart, where there is a good road and a harbour lately fitted up.
More inward stands Greenock, a well-built town and a good harbour in hewn-stone, belonging to Sir John Shaw, Bart., one of the most considerable upon all that coast;

Custom House Staff,
The staff at the Port-Glasgow Custom House is said to have con- sisted of one Surveyor-General with an annual salary of £350, and 54 subordinate officials whose salaries ranged from £200 to £35-in all, 55 persons with an annual salary list amounting to £2,120, while the (according to Chamberlayne) was subordinate branch at Greenock carried on by one Surveyor-General at £150 and six boatmen at £20 each per annum.

later authority, however, atates that the first Customs offi- cinia at Greenock consisted of 1
tide surveyor, 3 land waiters, 7 tide waitors, 6 boatmen and I weigher.
The population of Greenock in 1726 was probably just about twice the 1,400 credited to Port-Glasgow at that time, and the "good Har- bour of Hewn Stone" so attracted trade to the town that it gradually eclipsed the "wee Port" and became the central area for the Customs and Excise business of the dis- trict.

The tide-table given below has been obtained by aid of the Tide- predicting Machine, which in- cludes 40 components for the bet- ter prediction of tides, from the
observations, result of the analysis of the tidal taken at the Kaulung tidal observatory under the direction of Dr. Doberck dur- ing the years 1887, 1888, & 1889.

The times of high-and low- water must not be considered to coincide with the times of slack- water and change of current, the two phenomena being quite distinct.

This is the harbour, the debt on which the good folks of Greenock are said to have extinguished by copious libations of mall liquor, the inhabitants having subjected them-2 10 29 selves "to an assessment of Is. 4d. Ban. sterling on each sack of malt brew- ed within the limits of the town, in order to defray the cost of construc- tion."
The population, of Gourock 200 years ago was inconsiderable: but they claim to have produced the first red herring there!
