The death a month ago of Prince Leon Radziwill, chairman of the board of directors of Monte Carlo Casino, is now de- clared to be a mystery, by the Paris newspaper "La Liberte," which has undertaken to unravel the affair. It is stated that there was a wound on his thigh, that a towel stained with blood was found near the body, and that a person who was in the Įdeath chamber fled an hnate. The Monaco police arrested three suspected persons, released them, and then arrested two of them a second time, but the third one has disappeared. Prince Leon Radziwill was the son of the late Prince Constantine Radziwill, and had been associated with the Casino for many years.

Mr. Justice Greer, at the opening of the West Riding Assizes at Leeds, said one must not be too ready to draw an in-1 ference disadvantageous to the march of progress from the fact that at any one period there seem- ed to be something like a re- crudescence of crime. The chief constable's report showed that there were 1,171, or 35.9 per cent, more, indictable offences from January 1 to March 31 than in the previous March quarter, the great increase being in cases of theft and dishonesty. One could not help thinking, without dogmatising, that the increasing distress owing to industrial trouble and unenpolyment was responsible to some extent. "One must not be pessimistic about it." he added, "nor must one be induced to depart from the policy which has been so successful in the past of treating prisoners with greater leniency than used to be the case, a policy which has led to a progressive increase in the law-abiding character of the in- habitants of this country."
