FEWER IDLE SHIPS.

BRITISH FIGURES SHOW

IMPROVEMENT.

Returns prepared by the Chamber of Shipping show that on April 1 there were laid up idle in Great Britain and Ireland 168 vessels, of 239,681 tons. These figures repre- sent decrease of 125,198 tons net, as compared with January 1 last and of 120.167 tons net. or 33.39 per cent., as compared with April 1 of last year. The last two quar- those for the four quarterly datea terly sets of figures, together with of last year, are as follows:-

Date. April 1 January 1

As compared with the figures for January 1 last the total tonnage unemployed in England and Wales declined from 312,182 tons. net to 188,877 tons net on April 1. The ports showing the largest decrease were Liverpool with a reduction of 70,000 tons net, "Falmouth" with a decline of 17,700 tons met, and "Sun- derland" with a fall of 11,000 tons net.

On the other hand, an increase is shown for Newcastle of 7,000 tons net. The total for the whole of the Scottish ports represents an in- crease of 7,000 tons net. An in- crease of 6,000 tons is recorded at Leith and of 3,000 tons net at Glas- gow.

The present figures suggest that, allowing for obsolescent tonnage, the amount of efficient shipping idle in British ports has been reduced to comparatively moderate propor- tions.

For fifty years I have enjoyed my wife's happy companionship, her counsel, criticism, and occasional- ly her well-deserved reproofs.-- Lord Wyfold.

LIZARDS OR CROCODILES.

"The difficulty experienced by farmers in making ends meet would disappear if they would start rearing lizards or crocodiles in this country," declared Mr. A. W. Fair- weather (Arbreath), in an address to the Aberdeen Rotary Club. He ia a shoe manufacturer, and he re- vented the fact that much of the so-called lizard and crocodile skin, Bo popular for women's shoes to- day, was calf akin. "The real skins, however, are very popular, and the supply is not great. Any one starting a crocodile or a lizard farm would soon nay a good divi- dend."
