Berlin, May 13.
To-day will be known as "Black Friday" in the history of the Ber- Jin Stock Exchange where there has not been such a panicky feel- ing since the worst period of infla tion.
Tremendous slumps ranging from ten to forty points occurred in all kind of shares. The public took panic throwing shares on the mari ket at any price, so that thousands of pounds sterling have already bren lost.
The panic was a sequel to the Berlin banks, as a result of strong pressure from Dr. Schicht, Presi-s dent of the Reichsbank, agreeing to restret considerably, but gradually all credits for speculative or dis- count purposes. the first restriction, to the extent of 25 per cent, to be enforced in the middle of June.
Dr. Schacht, who is believed to desire to avoid un increase in the discount rate, which might have shaken the prestige of the Reichs- bank, is said to have threatened the banks with legislative measures unless they agreed to his demand.
Industrial leaders express the opinion that credit restriction will have detrimental, effects on indus- try as the reorganisation of indus- try is not yet complete and can be successfully carried out only if the Pourse is able to absorb new in- dustrial shares.-Reuter.
