BOTTLE'S LONG DRIFT A SEAFARING RACE. were:-Rev. E. Papinnt, Mrs. J.

.1.440-MILES JOURNEY IN

190. DAYS.

Interesting results of an inventi- gation into the water movements in the English Channel are given in the Journal of the Marine Biologi- cal Association. It is necessary to know these movements because of their effect on the drift of fish food and fishes about the seaa.

In July 1924 500. bottles, were i put in the sen, some designed for driftlag on the bottom and othors on the surface.

Surface bottles travelled rapidly up Channel to the North Sea and scross it. Many arrived in the Skager Rack, a journey of about 700 miles, made at the rate of more than six miles a day.

Two stranded in Jutland, three went ashore north of Goteborg, Sweden, and two at the head of Christiania Fjord. One bottle covered 1,440 miles at least and had done this in 190 days at "the amaz- ing over-all speed of some 7.6 miles a day."

GALLANT OFFICER.

Manchester Ship Canal Rescue.

Captain W. J. Haynes, master of the Clan liner "Clan Keith," has officially, informed his company of a particularly gallant rescue which took place while his vessel was com ing down the Manchester Ship Canal. His report is as follows:- "I beg to report that at 4-5 p.m. on March 17, whilst the vessel was moored at the dolphin at Eastham, I was sitting in my cabin writing. when, on hearing an unusual shout, I stepped out on the bridge and ob served a boy struggling in the Iwater about 35 ft. away. I threw a lifebuoy which was near at hand. and this fell within a foot of the boy.

Mr. Petherbridge, the third of cer, who was on the canal bank reading the draft, without divest -ing himself of any clothing, imme- diately plunged in and brought the boy to the bank. The boy. Thomas Walsh, aged 12 years, after being treated on board, was sent home in dry clothing?".

Walsh had been playing on the dolphin with two other boys when he overbalanced and fell into the

water.

Mr. Petherbridge resides at Groome Hill House, Blackheath, London, SE, and served his ap prenticeship with the Clan Line, and was later fourth officer of the "Clan McWhirter." It was only this voyage that he was promoted to be third officer of the "Clan Keith." The directors of the Clan Line have as a recognition of his gallantry, and steps are being taken to bring the matter to the attention of the proper authorities.
