SHIPPING SECTION.

"ASTOUNDED."

"ANJOU" & "WING ON" CASE FINDING.

OFFICERS AS "PASSENGERS."

"We are astounded at the man- ner in which the. Master of the "Anjoù” (Capt. J. Webster) and the Chlof Engineer of the same ship (Mr. J. W. McNaught) appeared to regard their respective duties", said the President of the Court of Inquiry (Lieut.-Comdr. G: F. Hole, R.N.) in giving the Court's finding yesterday regarding the collision off Wang Mun Crook on April 20 between the .s. "Wing On" and the s.s. “Anjou.”

The Court adjudged both masters (Capt. C. Mutton is the master of the "Wing On") to be censured,, holding that Capt. Mutton under- estimated his distance from the North Bank on turning under helmi and approaching the North Bank, endeavouring to turn sharply.

"The wind from the N.E. took hold of his bow and gave him a heavier swing than he was aware of. The swing he attempted to cor rect with his engines and caused him to assume, that the "Anjou" was making sternway towards him. By this time the "Anjon" had com- pleted her turn to the East and was struck by the bows of the "Wing On" on the stern in the fore and aft

line.

"Having examined the stern of the "Anjou" we have come to the conclusion that it was an end on blow and that the "Anjou" had hendway on at the time of impact. We are of opinion that the Master of the "Wing On' was in error in that he being the overtaking ship came into collision with the stern of the ship ahead but we do not consider that this in any way exempts the master of the “Anjou” from blame in that observing the "Wing On" extremely close to his stern he took absolutely no precau- "tions to avoid cplliston ng he might

have done by putting both his en- gines to full speed ahead.

"We therefore adjudge both Capt. Mutton and Capt. Webster to be censured. We are astounded at the manner in which the Master and Chief Engineer of the "Anjou” appeared to regard their respective duties. They appeared to be pas- sengers in the ship and to take no interest whatever in their respec- tive responsibilities. We there- fore adjudge them both to be most severely reprimanded;"
