NEW "
ATHOS."
MAIDEN VOYAGE of french LINER.
ARRIVED HERE TO-DAY.
Built in Germany on account of war reparations, the "Athos II" arrived at Kowloon wharf this' morning where she was admired by many eyes.
This new French liner is owned by the Service Contractuels des Messageries Maritimes who're cently took delivery of her, despatching her from Marseilles on March 25 on her maiden voyage to China.
She is a sister-ship to the "D'Artagnan" and "Chenon- ceaux" both well known in Hong Kong and the Far East,
Interesting Features.
It will be remembered that the first liner named "Athos," of the Messageries Maritimes, was torpedoed in the Mediterranean on Feb. 17, 1927.
The new liner, which has some Interesting features, has a length over all of 172.45m., a breadth of 20.10m., her maximum displace- ment is 21.380 tons, and her gross tonnage 15,950 tons.
Passenger accommodation has been provided for 167 first-class, 158 second-class, 104 third-class, and about 500 'tween deck (open berth) passengers.
Novel Rudder Device.
It is noteworthy that all first- cinus and second-class staterooms are side-cabins, as well as a large number of third-class cabins.
The whole of the decorative! work of the passenger accom- imodation has been carried out by French firms, while the hull and propelling machinery have been constructed by Germans.
Another feature of the "Athos II." lies in her "Oertz" rudder, this being the first application of this novel device on a French ship.
The "Athos II." was to sail for Shanghai at 4 p.m. to-day.
An "Oertz" rudder is also to be fitted on a steam trawler now building for a French company at a Bordeaux yard.

BIG OPIUM HAUL.
$250,000 WORTH SEIZED IN CANTON.
"INTENDED FOR MACAO."
Alleged to implicato a Portu-
guese resident in Canton, a Beizure of opium worth a quarter of a million dollars was made. by the Nationalist authorities whe, according to the "Canton Gazette" suspect that the large cargo of drug was intended for delivery to "a Portuguese merchant.....for the purpose of smuggling into Macao for sale."
The buyer is said to have paid į a large sum to the Canton re- Isident, with which to bribe the crew of the Nationalist gunboat
1:
NAVY TOBACCO CENSUS.
Devonport.-A naval order directs that in order to uscer- tain whether there is likely to be suficient demand for special cigarette tobacco to justify its addition to Admiralty supplies, the views of ships' companies are to be ascertained and reported to the Commander-in-Chief. This step is being taken in, conse- quence of a request that 'two separato types of manufactured tobacco should be supplied by the Admiralty for issue оп repny- ment for pipe and cigarette- amokers respectively.
"Hai Kang" to carry the dope from Wuchow down the West River.
The rest of the story, as told by the "Gazette," is as follows:-
The crew of the "Hai Kang" pretended to comply, accepted the bribe money, and proceeded to Wuchow to get the opium.
Fell Into A Trap. Quite unconscious that he had fallen into a trap, the Portuguese merchant handed the valuable opium to the crew of the "Haf Kang." The "Hai Kang," Instead of steaming for Macao, sailed for 4 Government searching station. the gunboat neared the station, Chang Wang, commander of the boat, ordered the arrest of all the ..smugglers.
After the summary arrest, Com- mander Chang Wang reported the matter to the nearest preventiva servico authorities on the Weat River Representatives were sent to the gunboat to conduct an in- vestigation. All the opiura on board was seized and brought to Canton. The crew of the "Hai Kang" will be suitably rewarded.
