CHIANG'S ANTI-RED COUP.
COMMUNISTS ARRESTED.
YESTERDAY'S SENSATIONAL EVENTS.
Street Åghting broke out in several parts of Canton in the small hours of yesterday morning when the Nationalist Army, with machine guns and armoured cars, and the support of river gunboats, brought of a coup against the Communist elements in the city.
Dead bodies of armed agitators were left in the streets for an hour or two. Several hundreds of Labour Union men were marched in ropes and chains to prison. All truffe in the city was suspended, till the afternoon.

Even in the city, strict measures were adopted to protect foreign- ers, but an unconfirmed report says that a number of "Red" Rus-i Bians were threatened and pur- Aued.
A cordon of picked gendarmes, supported by machine gumers.. was thrown around Shakee, the street which faces Shamcen and which is separated from the two Concessions by only a narrow creek.
Practically, the whole of the garrison in Canton was mobilised for the occasion.
Mortal Blow to Communism. "General Li. Chai-sum, com- manding the 4th Nationalist Array (who also holds the post- tion of Commander-in-Chief of Kwangtung Province and is chief of General Chiang Kai-shek's staff); brought in several regi- ments earlier in the week to guard strategic points: Com- mander Chien Ta-chun's gen- darmes and "peace. protection corps" were allotted the task of disarming pickets and Labour, "unions. The Police helped by controlling traffic. Two junk- loads of soldiers arrived up-river during the day.
Volleys, were heard in Shameen during the small hours of yester- day morning. The firing was in to the Wongsha, the "suburb west of the city. For an hour or so, the Union of the Cantor-Han-

There is no material change in the war position, the Nationalists being still confined to the Southern bank of the Yangtse. Firing con- tinues and the Nationalists are expected to retire.
