OVERLAND CHINA MAIL.

HOW TO HELP YOUR FRIENDS AT HOME.

All the Home papers that have arrived with the last two mails have been full of news about China.

Names and terms peculiarly Chinese have little significance for people not directly in touch with affairs. How can your # friends grasp the intricacies of the situation?

Each week the "Overland China Mail' serves as a summary of events in all parts of China. With the" care- fully written footnotes, explanations and comment, each copy will be found exceedingly useful.

To let others know the truth is to assist the cause of Britain in general.

The need for propaganda has been emphasised: Place the facts before those whose views are to be respected and the British out here will not be misinterpreted.

All sides to each question are presented as accurately as possible. Side by side with the "local" news and the "China" despatches, the "Overland" will supply all requirements,

This week's issue will tell how the negotiations were broken off at Hankow, at the eleventh hour-a very important event in itself and how all the other issues are connected with the various developments.

Hong Kong is the temporary home of Naval and Military detachments from elsewhere. Their activities in the Colony are that people awaiting news of Servicemen out also chronicled 10 here will be sure to appreciate a copy.

NUMBERING THE DAYS OF

JAZZ.

Lieutenant-Colonel J., Mackenzie- Rogan, former Director of Music of the Brigade of Guurde, was in reminiscent and humorous mood in the speech which he delivered as the guest of honour at a luncheon given by the City Lery Club at the Carpentors' Hall.

He spoke first of the development of military bands. In 1880 ench British regiment, he said, was per mitted to have one oboe, in addi- tion to its drums and fifes, and later the number of oboes was in- creased to twelve. It was not till 1904 that the State took any hand in the upkeep of military bands, the cost of which had previously been borne by the officers,
