Late Winter Showings Present a Comparatively Settled Mode-Hints of the New Fashions Abo und.

With every individual designer emphasising lines. andi details different from avery other. the winter fashions are most decidedly deceptive, and it is not until the 'anal winter showings that the mode is really established. General ac ceptance has separated the wheat from the chaff, and it is little short of amazing how much chaff the crop of fashions has brought. This is true in every respect. whether it has to do with fabric," colour line or trimming.

Coats, frocks both daytime and evening sports clothes and the eR- tire range of Imperative accessories have a place in every complete and graphie portrayal of the mode. Paris has presented a new. elegance which had to have time to settle into a form that was usable. One notices the very evident trend to ward intricate detail which is made to assume a decided simplicity by the art of the designer.

It is readily seen what this man! pulation means, so far as materials They must be are concerned. supple, and the really logical choice: is chiffon or Georgette. It is pos. Rible to find more models in the latter fabric than in any other one, for not only does it assume the desired lines in the body of the dress, but it makes elaborate And sleeves that are not too bulky. both chiffon and Georgette make the coloured slip. possible, which is always desirable in the interests of variety.

Sleeves Long And Intricate. "In a mode that inclines so very stoutly to elegance, the plain sleeve. has no place. It will be, inevitably, long; and will show elaboration somewhere between the shoulder and the wrist. Especially lovely when the fabric is right and the person who wears the model-is tha dolman armhole then, there is the sleeve that is full at the elbow and narrow at the wrist, or the one that

BLUE SHOES ARE SMART!

Skirt length is always an In- tarosting question, and while there are many rumours to the affect that longer skirts are to be a part of the new mode already appearing ong the horizon, late models are short-two and three inches below the knee, when becoming. It la. practically useless to repeat the warning. that one's figure should determine the skirt length, but it is true A full-length glass should Be consulted before the final deci alon is made.

The irregular hemline is the thing except, of course, in sports"; and tailored modulal It is reached in many different, interesting ways.. and is one of the most generally. becoming details of a mode that. should be found perfection, Indivi dually, since there are so many in- terpretations of it. Trimmings are elaborate-embroideries and other types of handwork; crystal effects on evening fracks, and fringe-but beware this intriguing stuff--it can be very unbecoming.

Daytime Dresses Are Varied. The rather elaborate frock that appears in the afternoon is a radi- cal departare from the dress that is tailored or sports in type, be- longing to the morning hours. For the latter wool, jersey, knit fabrics, velveteen and corduroy For the former silk, crepe, Georgette and velvet, a at that differs only in type from evening fabrica, which ure more fragile and, presumably, more delicate in colour.

+

Typical of the smartness of morning apparel, the little medel of plaided novelty wool shows the influence of the trend toward ele gance.. It is straight of ine, but not a pencil silhouette; it combines plam material with fancy in an in- teresting way, and it is belted and strapped and buttoned in an un- usual way. The long sleeve shows elaboration, but keeps to the spirit of the tailored mode; the collar is high-and smart.

Afternoon may bring out the smart little frock of crepe and parne

velvet which lustrates fashion's fair for two fabrics and two colours or shades of colours. Abrupt contrasts are not as likable as the more subtle ones, which the pictured model typifies. A model of this sort is always a welcome addition to the wardrobe for it may be worn under the coat for a morn ing's shopping and prove correct

for even an elaborate luncheon and
