PIRACY DANGERS.
RIVER TOW-BOATS PREFER TO STOP.
A MIDNIGHT ATTACK,
[From Our Own Correspondent. Pakkai, Kongmoon, Jan. 19. Local vernacular papers state that some of the river tow-boats will stop running for the period prior to China New Year to avoid the dangers of piracy.
"All Chinese. want to be in funds for the great. day and outlaws are no exception. They have been known in the past to make special raids towards China New Year Eve as so many people carry money about with them for business and shopping.
The boats concerned are those plying from the three ports" e., Kungyick, Suncheong and Chekhom) to other parts of the Canton River delta.
Canton's Navy at Work. Their owners are quoted 29 havng said that there are too many places en route which are pirate infested. They will, ac- cordingly, start again after the New Year (Feb. 3),
Chu Tau Shan is well fortified by the Nationalist garrison, which is assisted in anti-piracy work by the Canton gunboat "Kong Koo" and a few armed launches which protect, passing
vessels.
While a steam-launch stopped. overnight at Kungyick, a Дави senger declared that while pass- ing Tam-shui-hau he had heard intense rifle fire. It transpires.. that 200 robbers attacked a village from 71 at night till 2 in the morning but no further news. is to hand
