Dear Madam,-I enclose you letter, and cuttings from our local papers, and sincerely hope that you will carefully read them. These give a true description of what our British women and children went through during the recept troubles in Hankow, and other parts along the Yangtas.

It is unthinkable that a man who

has been in such a position as your husband, should, in his Bradford speech, make that statement about British merchants, which is so con- trary to the truth.

I also enclose you a report of the terrible slege of Sianfu which last-f ed seven months. Also accounts of other atrocities committed by the Chinese against Chinese these latter having not the remotest con- nection with Britons or other for- eigners,

Peking, Jan. 13. Regarding the Belgian offer to hand over the Tientsin Concession, it is interesting to note that the China Year Book for 1926 gives the population of the Concession as foreigners all, Chinese population 2,000.

The Jury having been duly worn, the Assistant Attorney. General said that they would have gathered that the case referred to the incident, or series of incidents, that took place on board the steamship "Sunning" on Novem- ber. 15. He, counsel, thought that every member of the jury would have either heard or read something about the "Sunning" piracy, but it was their duty to come into Court with a free and unbiased mind, forgetting every- thing they might have heard at any previous time.

Question of the Law. Continuing, Mr. Nihill said that the jury must understand that his Lordship would direct them as to any point of the law that might arise during the course of the trial, but in order that they might understand the grave "nature of the charge and the con

sequences to the prisoners should they be found "guilty," it was that he, Mr. Nihill, should make some reference to the law at the outset.
