FORD 5-DAY WEEK.
VOGUE OF CHEAP CAR WANING.
Mr. Henry Ford's plan for a fiyo- day week for his 125,000 employees has not received the enthusiastic
approval of those whom it chiefly concerns, according to despatches from Detroit, Michigan, and it is w fact that apparently a considerable number of the men are working even less than Ave days, with a propor tionate decrease in wages.
The apparent explanation is that the wave of prosperity which help ed so many industries in the United low- States has been a blow to priced motor-cars. The public are: willing to pay more to secure a motor, as distinct from "vver The Ford sales two years ago total- led nearly 2:000,000 in twalvo- months, against about 1,300,000 cars sold by all the other motor-car com- panies. COMING END OF SPEED
LIMIT.
Preparations are being made at the Ministry of Transport for the introduction next session of a Rond Vehicles Bill, which, it approved by the Cabinet, will deal in a compre hensive manner with the motor traffic problem..
So far as public vehicles are con- corned, the recommendations of a Departmental Committee, framed with the object of ensuring the greater safety of passengers are ex- pected to be fairly closely followed.. These recommendations relate main- ly to constructional requirements, conditions governing the granting of licences to drivers, and so on.
With respect to private cars, it is proposed that the speed limit for the open road should be abolished, and that the remedy against excessive speed should be a police prosecu- tion in cases where a motorist was held to be driving dangerously..

TESTING A MOTORIST.
When a charge of being drunk in charge of a motor-car against William Henderson Leighton, was heard at Newcastle-on-Tyne, both police officers who stopped the de- fendant, said he was zig-zagging
about the road; but both admitted they had got into the car and`al- lowed him to drive to the police
station.
Dr. Stephenson, the police sur geon admitted that he and a police officer allowed the defendant to drive them round the streets near the police station.
A
Mr. T. Smirk, (defending): If you were satisfied that the man was drunk why did you take a drunken man out in the middle of the night? Dr. Stephenson said, although he realised the man had a drink, he thought he might have been capable↑ of driving his car.
The case was dismissed.
A BLESSING.
A motoring friend told me the fol- lowing actual experience he had in Scotland this year, where he had rented for a month a stretch of famous salmon-fishing river for 4150. Histotal bag was three small off his
The necessity of this plate has been brought about primarily by the extensive foreign trade of the Stude- baker Corporation.
The serial number plate, of course, was made necessary by such extension of the motor car. In order that notice of registration may be known to every mian, regard- less of his native tongue, the ic- formation on the plate' has been translated into Spanish,Eun. garian, German, French, Dutch, Danish, Scandinavian, Swedish, Finnish and so forth. Even the queer hieroglyphics of the Jap- anese, Chinese, Turkish and Arabic languages are present..!
A striking example of the Stude- baker export aggressiveness may be seen in the introduction of the Erskine Six, 2.1/8 litre six-cylin der automobile, at the recent auto- mobile Salon in Paris: The Erskine Six is a car designed on the Euro pean, light car plan, yet it is pos- sessed of traditional Studebaker stamina and endurance.

MOTOR-COACH SAFETY.
Riding Beside Driver to be Illegal?
Under the new regulations for „motor-coaches" which will be in- corporated in the Motor Bill to come before Parliament in the New Year, it is stated that conversation be tween passenger and the man at the wheel will be prohibited.
In his report on the Naworth rail way level-crossing crash, in which a motor-coach was involved, Colonol Mount, who conducted the Inquiry on behalf of the Minister of Trans- port, stated that, although it had no immediate bearing on the ac- eldent, he wished to call attention. to the objectionable" arrangement which allowed a passenger to sit on the right-hand side of the driver.
Regulations will also be intro- duced making the inspection of all public service vehicles by local au- thorities compulsory.

It was ridiculous, Mr. H. C. A. Bingley, the Marylebone magistrate, declared, that the police, the magis- trates, and the public should have their time, wasted over so many summonses against motorista for merely "piffling offences. As far as he could see, no discretion was used in the passing of summonses some of which were too utterly absurd.
