"The force of the waves was very terrific," he continued, and I bave never seen anything like it before. I have been in more wind, but never in more sea; you could hear the sen coming quite two minutes before it descended on us.
The first sign of any trouble with the ship was "when the engine-room and stokehold became flooded through the skylights being burst in and the seas coming over. The fires were very nearly out, but fortunately they were not quité ex- tinguished, and we succeeded in keeping them going.

None of us had anything to eat except dry biscuits and a cup of fea'now and then, which was made in a bucket in the stokehold. Everybody did finely, no one needs special praise because everybody worked finely, if they had not it would have been most serious, and none of ua per- haps would have seen home again." Mr. A. Whito, the second en- gineer, of Portshead, said: "There were terrible columns of water in the engine room and the "engines had throttled, otherwise the steamer would have been swamped.
